Warning!
The application of garden chemicals in Germany is far more restrictive
than in the U.S.A. Before using garden chemicals in Germany, please review
guidelines below as well as specific label translations. Germans regard
their gardens as their own personal "forest reserves" and use
the minimum amounts of chemicals to do the job.
|
|
In
case of accidental exposure or swallowing, emergency first aid instructions
are available in this website!
Keep chemicals out of reach
of children. Use the links in the table above to locate the English language
chemical translations for specific chemicals used. There are also emergency
poison control numbers.

Atttention:
German plant protection laws prohibit the application of herbicides (weed
killers) on paved surfaces!
Herbicides are not allowed to be applied on
surfaces where rain water can run off residue into waterways or sewer
systems. Residue can contaminate waterways. Violators are subject to a
EUR 50,000 fine! Do not apply on inclined surfaces of any kind as well
as cobblestone or paved surfaces. Weeds growing through paved surfaces
should only be removed by using weeding tools.
|
|
German
law restricts the application of plant protection chemicals near protected
water conservations. (Wasserschutzgebiete)
There are specific application regulations which
vary according to distance from municiple waterworks, natural spring water
spas, and all other areas above sensitive ground water. Contact base commander's
office or municiple government authorities for further information!
|
|
Observe
waiting times between chemical application and harvest.
Follow label instructions precisely.
|
|
Honey
Bees are neccessary to maintain biospheres in the garden and are protected
under law!
Chemicals sold at AAFES
Europe are not dangerous to bees.
|
|
When
using dry chemicals, make sure that granulates or powder are worked into
the soil.
This ensures that chemicals
will not be eaten by birds or animals.
|
|
Allow
nature to use natural methods to help control pests and paracites!
Benefical insects and wildlife
control harmful paracites: birds, hedgehogs, voles, seven spotted ladybirds
(Marienkäfer), and lacewings (Florfliegen), rapacious mites (Raubmilben),
braconid wasps (Schlupfwespen). Keep a portion of your garden untended.
Provide nesting areas for birds. Provide a buffer zone for these beneficials
by not treating the edges of your garden. All of these measures will help
establish a refuge for these natural pest killers!
|
|
Be
mindful not to contaminate fish living in ponds, rivers, and lakes.
German legistlators are concerned about
residue getting into food chain. Product label will indicate whether specific
chemical is harmful or not. If substance has been proven to contaminate,
only use beyond prescribed distance from waterway.
|
|
Follow
proper chemical disposal procedures.
Please bring all residue garden chemcals and
packaging to base HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE site or to the nearest "Sammelstelle
für Haushaltschemicalen" on the German economy. Do not dispose
in sink, toilet, or waterways!
|
|
Use
only garden chemicals which have been specifically registered for sale
in your host country!
All chemicals sold at AAFES Four Seasons
outlets in Germany are registered by the "Biologische Bundesanstalt
für Land- und Forstwirtschaft", the German regulatory authority.
It is strictly forbidden to purchase plant protection chemicals in one
host country and use them in another. Even chemicals which appear to be
idential, like Roundup Herbicide, have special German formulations.
|
|
Do
not store garden chemicals with prescription drugs, food, or pet food!
Do not apply chemicals under windy conditions! Do not drink alcohol immediately
before, during, or after chemical application!
